Sunset at Lake Ontario in Oswego, New York

Imagine. You’re stuck in the middle of quarantine, bored out of your mind. Your parents won’t let you go anywhere with friends. So for fun, you drive separately to see a sunset that is 45 minutes away. Well, that’s easy for me to imagine, because that is my reality.

I picked up my ~almost 15 year old~ puppy and lifted him into my dad’s truck, onto the bench adjacent to the driver’s seat. I told Sparky we were going for a car ride and we’re going to see the sunset. He loves car rides and I think he was happy that I got him out of the house for a while! He laid down for the first half of the trip, on the highway, but as soon as we got off the highway, I put all of the windows down and he sat up on the bench with his head over the seat looking back at everything we passed. He was in his own world, just a happy puppy living the dream.

I met two of my friends at Breitbeck Park, in Oswego, NY, to watch the sunset. I hadn’t seen the sunset here before, but I always saw pictures on my friends’ stories who go to SUNY Oswego, so I knew it was a popular spot. I’ve also heard that it’s one of the best sunsets in the country, but I have yet to find a source to back it up. That goes without saying that this is an incredible sunset. The bright orange that lights the sky on fire as the sun is still setting is riveting. After the sun crosses the horizon, that’s when the magic really starts.

It begins with a light orange reflecting across the water. As the colors become more vivid, you become lost in your thoughts. That seems to happen a lot for me on my adventures, because when I let myself be fully present in nature, that’s when I feel most at peace.

As the sky got darker, I noticed the water after the rocks became lighter as you looked towards the horizon, however, you can’t really depict that from these pictures. I thought this was interesting because usually as the water goes further out it gets darker because it becomes deeper. I was truly in awe of the colors that this sunset displayed, I haven’t seen a sunset this vivid before!

For reference, the sunset was at 8:30 and my friends and I arrived around 7:45 so we wouldn’t miss it!

Definitely check this spot out if you’re looking to explore a new area!

Sunset Location: 43.462, -76.526.
