Day Trip to Ithaca: Taughannock Falls

Annnnnnnd in this corner….. Coming in at a whopping 215 feet….. Towering over Niagara Falls by 33 feet…… Taughannock Falls!

Taughannock Falls State Park is located in Ithaca, just about an hour and twenty minute drive from Syracuse, New York! As you drive through Ithaca, you’ll pass many mini waterfalls on your way! And when I say many – I mean many. Ithaca has over 130 waterfalls in ten square miles!!

Taughannock is truly a magnificent sight to see. The walk to the base of the falls is quite short, about 2 miles on a flat path. It’s very beautiful leading up to it, with trees hanging over the path.

Once my dad and I reached the waterfall, there was a cute little bridge you have to cross in order to get closer to the waterfall. The day I went it was a bit chilly out, and the wind was going in the perfect direction in order for us to get sprayed in the face by the waterfall. Our faces were frozen by the time we left! But we didn’t care because we were in awe of its’ power. My dad and I were debating if it was in fact taller than Niagara Falls, because to us it didn’t seem like it. But when you think about it, Niagara Falls is just so massive, in its height, width and power, that you’d think it would tower over any other waterfall. And since Taughannock isn’t as powerful it creates the perfect illusion! All in all, it is a beautiful waterfall and I look forward to coming back when it’s warmer out :)

As far as I know, there are two ways to get to the bottom of the falls. One way is by parking here, 42.545, -76.592. There is also a set of stairs at the top that leads you to the bottom (I’m pretty sure) and you can find that here, 42.539, -76.607. I haven’t taken the stairs to the bottom yet because they were closed for the winter when I went last year. When I go back to Taughannock (hopefully this summer) I will update this page with how that trail works :)
